Air Conditioning vs. Fans & Portable Coolers: What Actually Works

When temperatures climb, it's tempting to reach for a cheap fan or a portable cooler rather than commit to a proper installation. So how do they actually compare to a fixed air conditioning system? Here's an honest breakdown.

Electric Fans

Fans are cheap to buy and cheap to run, but they don't lower the temperature of a room at all — they just move the existing warm air around and speed up evaporation from your skin. On a genuinely hot night, that offers limited relief and does nothing about humidity, which is often the bigger problem.

Portable Evaporative Coolers

Evaporative "air coolers" add moisture to the air to create a mild cooling effect. They work reasonably well in hot, dry climates, which makes them poorly suited to a humid UK summer — adding more moisture to already-humid air tends to make a room feel stickier rather than cooler.

Portable AC Units

Portable refrigerant units genuinely do cool a room, but they're noisy, need a hose vented through a window (which lets warm air straight back in around the gaps), and are inefficient for the amount of cooling they deliver. They're a reasonable stop-gap for a single hot week, not a long-term solution.

Fixed Air Conditioning

A properly installed wall-mounted split system cools quietly and efficiently, actively controls humidity, filters the air as it circulates, and — crucially — also provides cheap, efficient heating in winter via its reverse cycle. The upfront cost is higher than a fan from a supermarket, but the comfort, the running cost per degree of cooling, and the year-round value are in a completely different league.

Fans and portable coolers are fine for the occasional warm afternoon. If you want reliable comfort through every heatwave and lower heating bills in winter, a properly sized and installed split system is the only option that actually solves the problem rather than just taking the edge off it.
