Air Conditioning Installation & Servicing in Surrey

Air conditioning in Surrey is a different job to air conditioning in central London, and mostly an easier one. There is more detached and semi-detached housing, which means more garden space for an outdoor condenser and far fewer freeholders and managing agents to satisfy before anything can be fitted. Pipe runs tend to be shorter and access tends to be better.

What Surrey does have is a lot of older, larger and listed property, and a lot of conservation areas — which shifts the difficulty from permission-to-fit toward getting the installation to look like it was always meant to be there. This page covers what we do across the county, what it costs, and the specifics of the three towns we work in most.

Air conditioning in Surrey means the same three services we run in London, delivered by the same engineers to domestic and commercial properties alike:

• Installation — single split systems for one room, multi-splits sharing a single outdoor condenser across several, and concealed ducted systems for period properties where nothing can be visible.
• Servicing — annual maintenance from around £90 per split system, which is a condition of virtually every manufacturer warranty and the single cheapest thing you can do to avoid a July breakdown.
• Repair — fault diagnosis and repair on all major brands, whoever fitted the system originally.

We are REFCOM registered, the industry certification scheme for businesses handling fluorinated refrigerant gases. That registration is independently audited rather than self-declared, and it is a reasonable thing to check on any Surrey installer you are considering — not only us.

Guildford is the furthest west we travel regularly, and it is worth being straight about that: it is a comfortable trip for an installation booked in advance, and a harder one for a same-day breakdown callout when the day is already full. For planned work it makes no practical difference to the price.

The town centre and the streets climbing the hill around it carry a lot of conservation-area constraint, and the older stock has solid walls that take longer to core-drill than a modern cavity. Where a condenser would be visible from a street in a conservation area, we plan the position at survey stage and, where it is needed, help with the paperwork rather than leaving you to discover the problem later. Outside the centre — the newer estates and the larger detached houses toward Merrow and Burpham — installation is usually very straightforward.

Woking is the easiest of the three towns to work in. The housing is predominantly twentieth-century, much of it detached or semi-detached with clear side access and garden space, which is close to ideal for a split system: short pipe runs, an outdoor unit that can sit at ground level well away from a neighbour's window, and cavity walls that drill cleanly.

The newer apartment developments around the station are the exception, and they behave like London flats — a managing company to satisfy, a constrained position for the condenser, and often a balcony or flat roof that needs access equipment. We flag which category your property falls into at the survey, because it is the single biggest driver of the final figure.

Leatherhead and the villages around it — Ashtead, Bookham, Fetcham — sit closest to our Wallington base, so this is where we can respond fastest on a breakdown and where same-day callouts are most often genuinely available.

The mix here runs from interwar semis to substantial detached houses and converted period property. The larger houses are where multi-split systems earn their keep: once you want three or four rooms cooled, a single outdoor condenser serving several indoor units costs substantially less than separate systems and puts only one unit on the elevation. If there is any chance you will want a second or third room cooled within a few years, it is much cheaper to size the condenser for it now than to add a second one later.

For most Surrey houses the outdoor unit falls under permitted development, provided it meets the conditions on size, siting and the noise it generates at the property boundary. Surrey's complication is the sheer number of conservation areas and listed buildings — far more per square mile than most of London. In those, anything visible from the street usually needs consent, and it is much cheaper to establish that before equipment is ordered than after it is on the wall. We check this as part of every survey.

We survey before we price. Plenty of air conditioning installers in Surrey will give you a figure over the phone without seeing the property. That is a guess, and guesses get revised upwards once the engineer arrives and finds the condenser has to go on a flat roof.
